Let’s stay fit Saint Charles!
Families staying fit in any area is important but of course our hometown has a lot to offer. If you are a St. Charles resident, there are a wide variety of programs and resources available to you. The park district manages a number of outdoor nature parks, trails, disk golf courses, and dog parks, as well as a number of recreational sports leagues and indoor activities.
The Great Outdoors
When it comes to outdoor activities in St. Charles, there is something for everyone. If you enjoy fishing and boating, Riverview Mini Golf has kayak and pedal boat rentals, and there are a number of public fishing ponds for amateurs and experienced fishermen alike. You can even take a scenic cruise on one of two paddlewheel riverboats, the “St. Charles Belle” and “Fox River Queen.”
James O. Breen Community Park is home to a 9-hole disk golf course, set on over 6 acres of land. The park district also maintains three dog parks, and the East Side Sports Complex has access to a pond where your furry friends can go for a swim. There are also three skate parks for in-line skating and skateboarding.
When the temperatures drop in the winter, look to the three ice rinks and two sled hills, which are all free of charge. There are opportunities for cross-country skiing as well once the trails are covered with snow.
Indoor activities
Have you ever wanted to try pickleball? If so, you’re in luck! You can try the game that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong at two indoor locations in St. Charles. Both Pottawatomie Community Center and the Haines Gymnasium offer playtimes for just 3$ per person.
The Sportsplex provides indoor turf fields, youth sports classes, and youth and adult lacrosse and soccer leagues. You can also rent their spaces for events and birthday parties, and reserve spots for one-on-one sports training.
For adults 50 and over, the Adult Activity Center has daily drop-in hours where you can participate in free activities, such as cards, billiards, and table tennis. Check their calendar for upcoming events, such as samba classes, bocce ball, and mah jongg.
Sports Leagues
Are you a former high school or college athlete, or simply someone who wants to learn a new sport and stay active? There are a number of leagues within the park district as well as outside clubs and organizations that offer opportunities to play.
The Fox Valley Maoris Rugby Club offers both adult and youth teams, and they have options for both experienced players and people who are new to the sport. There is a St. Charles Canoe Club as well, for those who prefer non-contact sports. They welcome all ages 12 and over, and all skill levels as well.
The park district also hosts recreational adult and youth leagues in a variety of sports, such as soccer and baseball. To explore all of their sports league offerings for all ages, visit the registration page here.
